Drinking Coconut Whiskey at the Source: Best American Travel Spots in the Coconut Growing Zone

Couple walks along a white sand beach flanked by palm trees to their right and the blue-green ocean to their left.

It’s common knowledge: when you want a taste of the tropics, make it Watertown Whiskey. The smooth taste of the whiskey, the delightful, delicious coconut flavor…there’s absolutely nothing better. However you choose to imbibe, whether neat, on the rocks or with a splash of water, Watertown Whiskey will make your taste buds sing of the tropics.

While you certainly don’t need to travel for a tropical experience when you’re drinking Watertown—because Watertown brings the tropics to you—sometimes you do want to get off the bar stool and actually go!

Book that flight and head on out to places our fabulous whiskey takes inspiration from. It’s the tropics, so you can go almost anytime.

Here are five great vacation spots you can visit and enjoy when a taste of coconut whiskey at home just isn’t enough.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

When people think ‘tropical’, they don’t necessarily think Alabama. That’s a mistake. With its subtropical climate, Gulf Shores has just as many white sand beaches and palm trees as any Caribbean destination. Gulf Shores is located on the Gulf of Mexico and is very close to Mobile Bay and is home to lovely aquamarine waters. The best times to visit are March to May and September to November. In the spring, the temps top out at about 80; in fall, it might reach the upper 70s.

In addition to the beautiful beaches, you can take a dolphin cruise, hike the Bon Secour Wildlife refuge or kayak the waterways and go osprey or heron spotting. Gulf Shores is a beautiful getaway when you need a taste of the tropics close to home.

For a refreshing, Gulf Shores-inspired whiskey tonic, mix 1.5 ounces Watertown coconut whiskey, one-half ounce fresh lemon juice and 3–4 ounces tonic water. The smoky whiskey, tangy lemon and sweet coconut combine for a delightful drink.

Key West, Florida

Key West is just over 100 miles to Havana, with the Florida Keys being in America’s subtropics. The dry season from November to April is amazing, with highs ranging from the upper 70s to the mid 80s.

Key West is famous for the many artists who were drawn to the island, with Ernest Hemingway and Jimmy Buffett among them. When you manage to pull yourself off the beach, you might want to dive into some snorkeling or scuba, try your hand at fishing, or unwind on a sunset cruise.

Try the Key West Cocktail: 2 ounces Watertown coconut whiskey, 1 ounce fresh lime juice, .75 ounces cream of coconut, 3 mint leaves and 8-10 dashes Angostura Bitters. Shake with ice.

Amelia Island, Florida

Located about 30 miles north of Jacksonville on the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Island is a picturesque oasis in northeast Florida. The temps in April and May range from 70 to the mid 80s, perfect for enjoying the emerald green waters.

Besides lounging at the beautiful beaches, you can observe turtles hatching, surf and skateboard, or go horseback riding. Practically the entire island is dedicated to some form of recreation or another.

For a Florida-inspired cocktail, try a Liquid Sunshine: 4 ounces Watertown coconut whiskey, 6 ounces of orange juice, 1 ounce of lemon juice, 4 dashes of bitters, 1 ounce of simple syrup, served over ice. The cheerful blend of orange, coconut and lemon makes for the tropical essence you expect from Watertown.

Catalina Island, Los Angeles, California

Catalina Island is 26 miles off the California coast, slightly south of Los Angeles. That distance makes Catalina both slightly cooler and also milder than LA. The average high temps in summer top out at 80 degrees. Even in winter, the daytime high averages between 60 and 65 degrees.

There are beaches perfect for snorkeling and swimming, as well as boulder-strewn shores ideal for hiking while taking in the rugged beauty of the wild Pacific. Other activities include bison expeditions, camping in the island’s interior, and glass-bottom boat cruises.

For a Southern California-inspired cocktail, try a Tropical Sunrise: three-quarters ounce of each Watertown coconut whiskey and pineapple juice, one-half ounce of simple syrup, and 3 ounces sparkling wine.

Molokai, Hawaii

Located between Oahu and Maui, Molokai is rustic and well off the beaten path, with relatively few tourists. The island is striving to balance welcoming visitors with preserving its rugged natural beauty. In spring, temperatures range from the upper 70s to the mid 80s.

When you’re not on the beach, you can enjoy hiking trails in the Halawa Valley, touring a macadamia nut or coffee bean farm, and experience the towering sea cliffs from the air. Molokai is a great place to visit if you’re interested in eco-tourism.

For a Hawaiian-inspired cocktail, try a Tropical Itch: 1 ounce of Watertown coconut whiskey, 1 ounce of rum, .5 ounces triple sec, 3 ounces of passion fruit puree, 1 ounce of pineapple juice, .5 ounces of lemon juice, two dashes of Angostura, and 1 ounce of dark rum.  It packs a punch.

Wherever you go, you’ll find a great beach in the coconut zone. These five spots are enough to get you started, and there are plenty more out there. But you don’t need to go to some far-flung location to grab a taste of the tropics. It’s available anytime when you have Watertown Whiskey!

Delicious straight or in a cocktail, our whiskey infused with natural coconut flavors offers a relaxing time whenever and wherever you want it, no beach required. Watertown Whiskey is the fastest way to get the party started.
